Officers responded to the Cheyenne Crossing Apartments, located at 17 West 31st Street in San Angelo, Texas and witnessed the defendant, Sydney Kennon, fleeing the scene. The victim, Roy Perez had been found outside the location and was dead from trauma believed to be the result of being shot with a firearm.
Surveillance video from another property was observed by the investigator and it was learned that three subjects could be seen entering an apartment and shortly after, a physical confrontation was observed at the front door.
In the confrontation, a subject, identified as Roy Perez, is shoved to the ground. Perez gets off the ground and walked around to the back of the apartment and is seen being pushed out of the dwelling. Perez is seen in another physical confrontation with Roy Perez Jr. and the defendant, Sydney Kennon.
The victim is seen walking towards the Kennon who repeatedly points an object at Perez. Then, Perez is seen slumping forward and walks back toward a black pickup in front of the apartment. Then the victim is seen falling to the ground.
Kennon is then seen running to the apartment then exiting and running up the stairs of the complex. Kennon then came back down and left the scene heading west on 31st Street towards Grape Creek Road.
A witness who spoke with detectives advised they heard the shots and saw the victim lying in the parking lot. The witness then went and performed CPR on the victim who was unresponsive and also did not notice any weapons on the victim’s person.
Roy Perez Jr. was interviewed by investigators and stated that he and the victim had gotten into an argument in the apartment. Perez Jr. stated that he began to push the victim out of the apartment to get him to leave and Kennon became involved as well. He also said the victim did not display or exhibit any weapons and then heard a gunshot.
Investigators spoke with Kennon who waived her Miranda Rights. Kennon advised that prior to the incident, she went with the victim, Roy Perez Jr. and Amanda Morgan to Wal-Mart located at 610 West 29th Street so Perez Jr. could purchase cell phones for her and the victim. After buying the phones, they returned to Cheyenne Crossing Apartments and went inside the apartment. Kennon then said that Perez Jr. and the victim got into a verbal argument and the victim would get mad for no reason. She said both Perez Jr. and the victim were displaying knives. Kennon said she was able to get the knife away from Perez Jr. and the victim put his knife back into his clothing. She then spoke with Amanda Morgan about the victim leaving so there would not be any further issues.
After that, Kennon said the victim became upset and had to be physically removed from the apartment. She also said the victim began threatening her. Kennon grabbed a gun from inside the apartment and said the victim threatened to stab her. She cocked the gun, and the victim began to confront her. Kennon said she told the victim several times to stop and advised the victim had a knife in his hands. She continued to say the victim threatened her and then she pulled the trigger, but the gun did not shoot.
Kennon cocked the gun and pulled the trigger again. This time the gun fired and she said she was in shock. She said she left the scene because everyone there told her to leave. Kennon removed the ammunition from the gun and placed it into a trash can.
Investigators reviewed cellphone footage of the shooting. In the footage the victim can be seen walking towards Kennon. Kennon continues to back away with the gun pointed at the victim. She is then seen firing the gun at the victim and the victim grabs his left chest area. The victim is not seen displaying a knife in the cellphone footage.
Two other individuals were interviewed, and both said they did not see either the victim or Perez Jr. display a knife, and both heard Kennon threaten to shoot the victim.
