Details Emerge As Suspect Involved in High Speed Chase Identified

SAN ANGELO – The suspect that led police on a high-speed chase through northern Tom Green County and north San Angelo has been identified by Police Wednesday afternoon.

San Angelo Public Information Officer Richard Espinosa said in information released that on July 6, 2022 around 12:13pm, San Angelo Police Department’s patrol division attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a White in color Dodge Dually pickup near the intersection of W. 9th and N. Irving Street.

The driver of the pickup (later identified as Shane Keele 42) failed to stop and proceeded to lead officers on a slow speed pursuit into the North side of town.

As we reported earlier, Keele continued to evade in the vehicle and ended up in the County where the Sheriff and Constable’s office assisted with the pursuit.

The Pursuit continued into the county where Keele’s vehicle was observed intentionally striking a marked Sheriff’s Patrol unit causing damage to the unit. Keele then continued back into the city limits where SAPD officers attempted to deploy “Stop Sticks” multiple times in the path of Keele's vehicle. SAPD officers were unsuccessful in the utilization of the “Stop Sticks” as Keele actively avoided them by driving around them with his vehicle.

As the chase continued, the end result was a collision with a Red in color GMC Terrain at the intersection of Dallas and N. Van Buren. Keele then exited his vehicle and fled on foot into the median of Houston Harte Expressway. Keele was quickly taken into custody by Officers and he was secured in a marked patrol unit.

It was learned that a 37-year-old female (passenger in Keele’s vehicle) and a 69-year-old female (Driver of the GMC Terrain) had injuries associated with the collision. SAFD Medics were requested on scene and ultimately transported Keele and the 69-year-old female to Shannon Medical Center for treatment. The 37-year-old female refused medical treatment and was released on scene.

SAPD’s Criminal Investigations Division assisted with the investigation and the initial charges for Keele will be:

  • Evading Arrest/Detention with a Motor Vehicle
  • Evading Arrest/Detention on Foot
  • And a County Warrant arrest

Keele also received citations for Disregarding a Stop Light, No Insurance, and Driving While License Invalid.

Additional Charges may be forthcoming as this incident is currently under investigation.
