Suspect Accused of Killing Autistic San Angelo Man Sentenced

 

SAN ANGELO, TX – A San Angelo man accused of murdering an autistic friend in Apr. 2021 was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Friday morning.

According to court documents, on Apr. 22 at 10 a.m., Ian Smith, 21, accepted a plea deal from the District Attorney's Office. In the deal Smith's charge was lessened from murder to aggravated assault with deadly weapon.

Smith was originally arrested in on Apr. 3, 2021 for the murder of 24-year-old Sterling McCain. For the original report see: San Angelo Man Murdered Saturday Night

Following the original report it was learned, via an affidavit released by the Justice of the Peace's Office, that McCain had been on a tirade after going on a day trip to Fredericksburg with his wife. Smith, who knew McCain, attempted to calm him down. Eventually Smith shot and killed McCain. Smith has been in the jail since the original arrest. He will get time served.
