Midland Christian School Athletic Director First to Resign Amid Brutal Abuse Scandal

MIDLAND, TX- The Midland Christian School athletic director who was arrested with four others amid a sexual assault hazing scandal has resigned.

Midland Christian’s athletic director Greg McClendon has resigned after he was arrested and charged with failing to report an incident with intent to conceal neglect or abuse.

McClendon said in a statement:

"For the last 24 years, Midland Christian has been such a huge blessing in my family’s lives and mine. I am thankful for the leadership of superintendents Eddie and Jared Lee; I could not have found more honorable men to work for in my career. I am also forever grateful for the coaches and athletes who worked so hard and demonstrated such dedication over the years. I believe it is the right time to step away from Midland Christian and wish the school the very best.

God Bless, Coach Mac”

In February, McClendon, a coach, and 3 administrators were arrested and escorted off campus after a disturbing video was taken at the school that depicted a sexual assault.

According to reports, the assault took place at Midland Christian's baseball field, Christensen Field. The victim alleged the assault happened after practice where several teammates turned off the lights, struck the victim with a baseball bat, then used the bat to sexually assault the victim in "Freshman Initiation".

The victim reported the assault to the coaches who allegedly did nothing. Then the victim went to the Midland Police who contacted Superintendent Jared Lee. Lee said that Dana Ellis reported the assault to him then Lee told McClendon and Matthew Counts to handle it.

Lee refused to speak to police after they asked for documentation of the assault which cause the police to obtain a search warrant. The Midland Police found emails between the five individuals refusing to report the assault to the police.

This gave enough evidence to arrest Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Greg McClendon, High School Assistant Principal Matthew Counts, Superintendent Jared Lee, Principal of Secondary School Dana Ellis, and Head Baseball Coach Barry Russell.

Also reported that a juvenile was arrested as well.

McClendon is the only one of the 5 arrested to resign and the other employees arrested will not be allowed on campus until the legal process is through.
