Coleman Police Need Help in Identifying a Porch Pirate

 

COLEMAN, TX- The Coleman Police Department need the public’s help in finding a porch pirate.

Originally posted to social media, the victim’s Ring doorbell caught the suspect stealing packages off their porch. The video is low resolution, but the subject was wearing a red hoodie and black pants. Three packages were taken in the video.

Porch piracy and mail theft has been a crime and is usually a class A misdemeanor which carries a possible fine of $4,000.00 and up to 1 year in jail.

House Bill 37 was passed in 2019 and adds felony charges based on the number of packages, type of victim, and use of identifying information from stolen mail or parcels.

It is a state jail felony to steal mail from less than 30 residences which is punishment is up to 180 days to 2 years in jail and a $10,000.00 fine. If it is over 30 addresses, it becomes a 3rd degree felony which carries a punishment of 2 to 10 years of confinement and a fine up to $10,000.00.

Should the victim be elderly or disables, the charge is increased to the next highest charge.
