San Angelo Man Who Was Tased 3 Times Indicted for Resisting Arrest

SAN ANGELO, TX- A San Angelo man has been indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury for assault, driving while intoxicated, and running from the police.

On September 10, 2021, San Angelo Police responded to the Red Lion Hotel, located at 441 Rio Concho Drive, regarding an assault. With help from the victim, SAPD was able to locate a dually pickup driving out of the parking lot. Police attempted to make a traffic stop but the subject drove all the way to his residence.

Once contact had been made with him, Sam Romo began aggressively approaching cops and was not complying with verbal commands. Service weapons were drawn but Romo was tased and a takedown attempt was unsuccessful due to his large stature.

Romo grabbed one officer’s radio and ripped it off his body which led to Romo being tased for a second time. Finally, after being tased a third time, Romo was restrained and put into handcuffs and taken into custody.

The officer reported he smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from Romo’s breath and in the back of the police car showed more signs of intoxication with slurred speech and eventually falling asleep.

When they arrived at the Tom Green County Detention Facility, Romo refused to perform a standardized field sobriety test and decline to give a breath and/or blood sample after being read the statutory warning.

A criminal history check was completed for Romo, and it showed that he had two prior driving while intoxicated convictions.

While Romo was being detained, other officers were at the original Red Lion scene with the victim.  The victim informed officers that Romo had been drinking. Also, the victim accused Romo of strangulation .

In the end, Romo was arrested for driving while intoxicated 3rd or more, resisting arrest, assault by strangulation/impeding breath or blood circulation, driving while license invalid, and evading detention in a motor vehicle. Also, Romo struck an unattended vehicle in the Red Lion Hotel parking lot that was confirmed by video surveillance.

For the indicted offenses of driving while intoxicated 3rd or more, assault, and evading, all three are 3rd degree felonies and Romo is facing 2-10 years in prison and a $10,000.00 fine for each charge.
