ABILENE, TX –– The driver who killed two young teens three years ago has been sentenced to less than 1 year in prison.
Back in 2018, Shelby Lynn Buchanan was driving her pickup down I-20 when she slammed into the back of a minivan. As a result of the crash, 14-year Melissa Grace and 11-year-old Starla Lindley were killed on impact.
According to court documents, authorities discovered Buchanan was "actively using the Chick-fil-A application" at the time of the crash.
As a result of the crash, Buchanan was charged with two counts of manslaughter.
On Tuesday, Buchanan pled guilty to two both counts and was sentenced to a total of 360 days confinement in county jail. After serving her jail sentence, Buchanan will spend 10 years on probation.
She will also pay a $500 fine and restitution to the family in addition to 800 hours of community service.
