Pet Sitting Scam Hits Angelo State University

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State University Police Department issued a warning Friday urging the public to beware of a pet-sitting scam email.

According to the Angelo State Police Department, on Aug. 10, there is a pet-sitting scam email being sent around. Please do not respond to the sender of the email.

If you receive an email you were not expecting or did not ask for, please be especially cautious. Any offers of or requests for money should be looked at as potential scams.

If the email sender requests any personal information such as a personal email address, bank information, credit card information, or other personally identifying information, do not provide it and contact the ASU IT security office at [email protected] or 325-942-2911.

Often the criminal scam artist will begin to use language designed to create fear or shame or a heightened sense of urgency such as “Why do you not want to help an older person?” or “If you don’t help, we will post your name and response on social media.” Do not respond with any personal information.

If you encounter any other emails that seem suspicious or you have any questions about email security, please call or email the ASU IT security office at [email protected] or 325-942-2911.
