Inmates Indicted for Jail Riot that Injured 3 Tom Green County Jailers

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Tom Green County Sheriff reported a disturbance within the Tom Green County Detention Facility occurred within a multiple occupancy unit on Thursday, April 5. The Tom Green County Detention Center Special Operational Response Team responded to the cell block where the incident was occurring and restored order. Three correctional officers were injured in the mayhem. All were transported to Shannon Hospital where each was treated and released with minor injuries.

The Tom Green County Criminal Investigation Division and the Tom Green County Detention Center investigator conducted an investigation to determine how the disturbance began and who was involved.

According to a criminal complaint, the corrections officers were lured into a cell block M-8 at the new Tom Green County Detention Center where they were met by inmates wearing face coverings and ready for a fight. One inmate, later identified as Anthony Gallegos, charged the detention officers and a melee ensued between detention officers and at least four inmates.

Detention officers managed to detain Gallegos, but while doing do, another inmate struck an officer in the nose with a closed fist. He was treated for a laceration to the bridge of his nose and required stitches.

Later, while investigators reviewed surveillance video of the assault, they identified the inmate who struck the detention officer as Arturo Garcia, 18.

A female corrections officer was also injured. According to court documents, the female officer was hit in the back of the head. She received medical treatment for two large bumps where she was hit. Video from the security cameras revealed that Jacob Garcia, 25, assaulted this officer.

Inmate Daniel Adam Cheek, 35, knocked out cold a third correctional officer. According to court documents, Cheek struck the officer in the right temple area of his head and above the right eye. After falling to the ground, the officer was repeatedly struck by inmates Arturo Garcia, 18-year-old Sean Wisdom, and Cheek as he lay unconscious. The injured officer was eventually pulled from the cell block and rushed to the hospital. When he awoke, the officer had no recollection of the incident.

All four inmates were indicted by a Tom Green County Grand Jury and each was charged with the offense of Assault on a Public Servant, a Third Degree Felony. The inmates will be prosecuted by the 51st and 119th Tom Green County District Attorney's Office. The inmates are listed as follows:

  • Arturo Garcia Jr., 18 YOA
  • Sean Hunter Wisdom, 18 YOA
  • Jacob Lewis Garcia, 25 YOA
  • Daniel Adam Cheek, 35 YOA

The first pre-trial hearing on the indictment for Arturo Garcia is scheduled for 2 p.m. on August 24 in Judge Brad Goodwin's court. Jacob Garcia will have his first hearing in court on August 3 in front of Judge Carmen Dusek. Cheek will enjoy his first hearing in front of Judge Jay Weatherby on August 17. Wisdom's first court appearance will be October 5 in Dusek's courtroom.
