Dangerous Fugitive Captured Then Indicted for Several Crimes

SAN ANGELO,TX – Nelson Estrada has been indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury in May for possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, evading arrest and unauthorized use of a vehicle.

Back on March 9th, Nelson Estrada stole a Mercedes-Benz 300 without the consent of the owner.

The next day on March 10th, SAPD located the stolen Mercedes-Benz 300 in the north alley of the 1100 block of East 19th Street.

A chase ensued and the officer wasn’t able to keep up safely with Estrada and he called off his pursuit. Another officer with the San Angelo Police Department located the vehicle and continued the chase.

The suspect vehicle traveled west in the alley of East 19th to Briant Street. The chase continued west in the alley of East 19th and Pecan Street then back east on East 19th. The officer said the suspect vehicle traveled at a high rate of speed, heading south on Magdalen Street. Estrada disregarded a stop sign and nearly crashed into another vehicle. Estrada then turned west on 8th Street and crossed over Chadbourne.

The chase again picked up speed traveling north on North Irving Street. Estrada turned left on West 23rd Street where Estrada jumped out of the vehicle and evaded arrest on foot.

The SAPD officer made a positive identification on Nelson Estrada.

A search for the felon began but came up empty but Estrada’s presence was felt as he left a loaded black Heritage Arms .22 caliber revolver with a brown handle on the floor boards.

The Mercedes-Benz 300 was returned to the owner.

This wouldn’t be the last of Nelson Estrada. The very next day, March 11th, SAPD responded to the north side of town where Estrada and another man went to a house on 19th Street to buy a vehicle from the woman.

The woman’s son went outside and got into an argument with Estrada. The exchange escalated and Estrada eventually pulled a gun from his clothes and pointed it at the mother and son. Nelson would then shoot the ground and as he was leaving with the other man, Estrada decided to fire the gun in the air several times.

The vehicle Estrada left in was located around 7:00 p.m that night near 22nd and Bradford. Several SAPD officers followed the vehicle into Nueva Vista Apartments on Lillie Street.

Nelson Estrada was again positively identified exiting this vehicle. SAPD identified themselves and ordered Estrada to stop. Estrada disregarded this order and fled and entered an apartment.

Estrada would slip through SAPD’s fingers again as he “created” another doorway into an adjoining apartment and escaped.

Back in the vehicle, SAPD officers noticed a black handgun in the backseat behind where Estrada was sitting. The other man who was with Estrada spoke with detectives and said the gun belonged to Estrada.

Estrada would go quiet for the next few days until March 14th.

Estrada’s legs eventually gave out as officers arrested him in the 800 block of San Antonio Street.

Nelson Estrada currently sits in the Tom Green County Detention Facility on $295,000.00 bond.
