Habitual Drunk Driver Nearly Kills Man After Running Him Off the Road

SAN ANGELO, TX – A habitual drunk driver was indicted in April for running a person off the road and into a metal fence.

According to court documents, on Feb. 2, officers with the San Angelo Police Department were dispatched to the 5000 block of N. Bryant Blvd. for the report of a major crash involving a truck, a vehicle that fled the scene and a fence.

When officers arrived they discovered a 1999 4-door Chevy that had crashed into a business's metal pipe fencing. The pipe had gone through the front windshield and out the back passenger window.

The driver of the vehicle was bleeding from a small contusion on the back of his head but was not hospitalized by the crash. The officers spoke with the man and discovered that someone had ran him off the road.

The victim claimed that he had just left the 29th St. Walmart and went North on N. Bryant in the right hand lane. As he was pulling onto Bryant he noticed a white pickup in the left lane.

As the man was approaching the Chadbourne exit, he looked in his rearview mirror and noticed the white truck had gotten behind him in the right lane. Not only was the truck in the right lane but the man claimed it was speeding up behind him.

In order to avoid the pickup, the man slowed down and moved toward the right side of the lane but the truck sped up and crashed into the bumper of the Chevy. The pickup continued to bump into the Chevy until it ran off the road and into the metal pipe fencing.

After the crash the victim got out and asked what the man's problem was. He responded by telling the victim that he had known what he had done and that the victim knew the man.

He then proceeded to attempt to run the victim over with the pickup. The victim was able to run inside the near by business and call 911. He did see the truck then pull off and head north towards the North Chadbourne intersection.

Officers on scene found a license plate that had fallen off of the pickup that were registered to Olen McClain. The truck was a 2014 GMC 2500. Surveillance footage from the business showed a man who match McClain's description.

Later that night the truck was discovered by a Tom Green County Sheriff's deputy off of Martin Rd. and Rust Rd. Inside of the truck, McClain was asleep in the front seat. The deputy then woke him up and found him to be intoxicated. McClain was then arrested for another drunk driving charge. Although it is unknown how many DWIs he has in 2020 he was charged with DWI third or more. Now he is facing another DWI third or more charge.

The officer on scene then spoke with McClain who refused to give a statement regarding the crash. He was then charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

McClain was indicted for the charge on Apr. 7. He has a post indictment hearing scheduled for May 5. He is currently in the Tom Green County Detention Facility on a $150,000 bond.
