San Angelo Man Tried to Leave Gun Shop with a Rifle in his Pants

SAN ANGELO, TX – The owner of a San Angelo gun shop detained a man Tuesday after he attempted to walk out of his store with a rifle in his pants.

According to court documents, on Feb. 2, officers with the San Angelo Police Department were dispatched to the Texas Gun Shop on the 1000 block of W. Beauregard for the report of a theft.

When they arrived they met with the wife of the store owner who told officers that she witnessed a man in brown coveralls steal a 450 Bushmaster rifle.

After she saw the man stick the gun down his pants, she alerted her husband, the store owner, about the theft.

The store owner approached the man and told him to unzip his clothes. When the gun was found the owner detained the man until SAPD officers arrived on scene.

Police then spoke with the suspect and he was identified as 42-year-old David Hampton. Hampton is charged with Theft of a Firearm and is currently in the Tom Green County Jail with a $10,000 bond.
