ABILENE, TX -- A domestic disturbance turned into a dangerous situation after a man took a woman hostage at knifepoint.
According to APD, just before noon on Sunday officers were dispatched to a home near S. 22nd and Poplar Streets.
Someone inside the home had called 9-1-1 and the dispatcher who answered the call heard a domestic disturbance in the background.
Specifically, a man was threatening to kill a woman with a knife.
When offices arrived at the scene, they attempted to negotiate with 45-year-old Mario Cearda Rivera, Jr. until the SWAT team could arrive.
As the SWAT team surrounded the home, Rivera exited the house while holding a knife to the victim.
According to officers, the victim and the suspect were involved in a "violent struggle."
One of the SWAT officers fired a single shot and hit the suspect.
Rivera was then transported to the hospital to be treated for the injury. After being released from the hospital, he was booked into the Taylor County jail and charged with aggravated kidnapping.
According to Assistant Chief Mike Perry, the victim was shaken by the incident but she was not injured. APD will help her find a safe place to go.
The SWAT officer who fired the shot was placed on administrative leave and will undergo counseling,
The Texas Rangers will conduct the investigation.
