Suspect Involved With Car Theft Sting Shot a Man on Christmas Eve

SAN ANGELO, TX – A suspect who shot a man in the chest on Christmas Eve led the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office to discover a massive amount of stolen cars and guns.

According to court documents, on Dec. 24, deputies with the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office responded to a shots fired call on the 8200 block of Old Sterling City Hwy. for the report of shooting.

When the deputies arrived they found a 47-year-old man who had been shot four times. The victim told deputies that he was shot by "Chin Check" and was then rushed to the hospital.

At the time of the shooting two people were on the property James Porter and Debby. The deputies spoke with the first person 25-year-old James Porter. Porter told deputies that he was the one who shot Jim Chadwick after an argument got heated.

Porter told deputies that the man became aggressive towards the other resident while she attempted to get the victim to leave the property. He claimed the man grabbed a rake and began swinging it at Debby which made him try to control the situation.

The man continued to swing the rake at the two, claimed Porter, and at one point was "straight up charging, full fledge f--king running, and me and Debby back peddling." Porter continued by claiming that they had taken "a good amount of steps backward" and "got her out of the way in the nick of time."

This is when Porter pulled out a .25 ROHN firearm and shot two "warning shots" in the air followed by six shots in a row. Porter claimed to have shot the man after he began charging Porter.

Deputies then spoke with Debby. In her statement she never mentioned back peddling. She said that the man had a rake but didn't know where it went. "after him passing me all that with him I don't now where the rake went when the man hit the ground he didn't have it in his hand no more," stated the affidavit.

Debby also told deputies that "it wasn't him running up to him" meaning the man was not "straight up charging, full fledge f--king running, and me and Debby back peddling."

The deputies found the rake and it was located 32 feet from where the first drop of blood was observed. The rake was also 23 feet and four inches from where the man was lying face first when first responders arrived.

Meanwhile at Shannon Medical Center, the man told investigators that he did not want to press charges. That looked to be the end of the story.

That was until Jan. 13 when Tom Green County Sheriff's Office Investigators met with someone who also lived on the property. The resident had a surveillance camera of which didn't show anything that occurred Christmas Eve but had audio of everything that happened.

At 6:30 p.m. that night Debby is heard telling the man to leave. The man is heard screaming "F--k!" Tens seconds later two loud bangs are heard followed by Debby yelling "Get the f--k off my property." Seven seconds later, the man is heard saying "ok." At 6:32 p.m. a large item was heard being thrown and sliding on the ground. Three seconds later four gunshots were heard. One second later the man can be heard screaming. A voice can be heard saying something like "take that" followed by the victim saying "Hey man, I was going to leave."

A warrant was then issued for the arrest of Porter for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Porter also had fifteen other miscellaneous warrants.

On Jan. 27, the warrant was served and Porter was arrested. During the search of the property the sheriff's office found numerous stolen cars, guns and a utility trailer. TGCSO is claiming that a massive car theft operation was being run on the property. No one has been arrested for the car thefts as of this time. Porter is currently in the Tom Green County Jail on a $100,000 bond. If he is released he can have contact with the victim.
