Sheriff Says NYE Hunting Cabin Shooting Being Investigated as a Criminal Matter

SAN ANGELO, TX — The man shot and killed at a San Angelo area New Year’s Eve party may get justice. According to Sheriff Nick Hanna, a criminal investigation was opened and his detectives are gathering evidence that he hopes will be submitted to a grand jury.

“The case is an active investigation and will be presented to a grand jury once the investigation is completed,” the Sheriff said.

Details of the shooting incident that left one man, Asa Nixon, 38, dead of a gunshot wound, were released Friday, however the information opened the incident up for more questions than answers.

According to the Sheriff, friends were gathered at a hunting cabin in the 11000 block of FM 2335, the road between Tankersley and Knickerbocker, for New Year’s Eve. During the NYE celebration, a playful snowball fight ensued, but it quickly escalated into a verbal and then physical altercation between the soon-to-be shooting victim and another person at the party. Others at the party separated the two, and the victim left the party, retreating to a nearby residence.

Later in the evening, the victim returned and threatened the other revelers. The threats were severe enough that the revelers retreated to inside the cabin and locked the door as best they could. That didn’t stop the victim, who was apparently still angry. He broke into the cabin and approached the revelers inside, some of whom fled to the bathroom inside and locked the door. The victim continued to approach the other partiers not secured in the bathroom. As the victim approached, one of the partiers pulled out a gun and fired a single round, killing the victim.

The name and age of the alleged shooter has not been released because we were told there are safety concerns and there have been no arrests reported by county officials. The Sheriff said his detectives are working with the office of the district attorney in this matter.

Family members of the victim, Mr. Nixon, were outraged at the initial reporting from the incident. A woman claiming to be a member of Nixon’s family called San Angelo LIVE! to demand the story be deleted. We declined. She claimed there was much more to this story that has been released.

Law enforcement information is always tagged with the claim that the matter is an ongoing investigation, regardless of severity. In this case, the Sheriff stressed, the investigation is ongoing as a criminal matter.

"We will consult with the district attorneys regarding the filing of any criminal charges," Hanna said.

What will our legal system do?? Place the shooter on probation like all of the PEDOPHILES?? Our justice system needs an overhaul, just like our federal government.
