Police: Scammers Pretend to be Mexican Cartels to Extort Callers

ODESSA, TX -- The Odessa Police Department is warning citizens about a phone scam allegedly connected to a Mexican cartel.

According to law enforcement, citizens have reported they received a call from people pretending to be part of a Mexican cartel and claiming they had kidnapped a family member.

The caller would then ask the person answering the phone to wire them money if they wanted to see their family member again.

OPD asks that citizens who receive these types of calls to hang up and notify the police department with the caller’s phone number and any names associated with the call.

Law enforcement reminds citizens to never pay any money or provide any personal information.
