Small Town Increases Law Enforcement Presence Amid Crime Spree

WINTERS, TX – The City of Winters has decided to "beef up" the police presence around town after an uptick in recent burglaries and home invasions.

According to KTXS, on September 30, both the Winters Police Department and the Runnels County Sheriff's Office have decided to increase police presence after more than 30 homes were burglarized. Some of the burglaries included home invasions.

Surveillance video collected from a local neighborhood watch group shows that it seems to be the same people in each break in.

A number of people around Winters has grown tired of the crime spree including City Councilman Steve Joeris.

"Some manpower and some resources to get this stopped because it's out of hand," said Joeris.

The Mayor of Winters has also released a statement regarding the incident.

"It is my opinion that ensuring public safety is one of the most important duties a City Council owes to the citizens they serve. The recent spate of thefts in Winters has tested us all. I have had and continue to have faith in stability to both City and County law enforcement. The City of Winters will use all resources available to address the thefts and bring charges against those responsible. I encourage the community to report any suspicious activities or concerns to law enforcement immediately. I also encourage people to secure home, vehicles, and property. I am saddened that we no longer live in a time when everyone knew everyone, when locking a vehicle or even your home was not necessary. I encourage everyone to come together and work as the tight knit neighbors we have always been."
