Multiple Grass Fires Cause Temporary Highway Closures

SAN ANGELO, TX – Multiple volunteer fire departments responded to a series of grass fires along Hwy 87 N.

Radio reports indicate a truck pulling a trailer with a dragging chain could be creating sparks that ignited the fires.

The Grape Creek VFD, Quail Valley, and Carlsbad were called to put out the multiple grass fires. The initial fire was located near Ballard and Pyburn roads and then volunteers were sent to put at a fire near Apache Trail.

Reports indicated flames were also visble at the intersection of Chadbourne St and Hwy 87 N.

The fires caused a traffic jam as Tom Green County Sheriff’s deputies shut down parts of the road to give the firefighters access.

Both north and south bound lanes are currently closed as volunteers work to put the fire out of the median.
