Lawyer Receives No Jail Time After Stealing From Clients

ABILENE, TX – Burt Burnett, a former personal injury attorney who had been accused of stealing thousands of dollars from clients, has been sentenced to ten years deferred adjudication.

Back in October Burnett pleaded guilty to the second-degree felony and had been awaiting his sentence.

Burnett’s clients claimed he had kept a substantial amount of their settlements.

According to KTXS, back in 2018 Burnett had pleaded not guilty to two counts of misapplication of fiduciary property and blamed his law partner, Majd Ghanayem. Ghanayem was disbarred last December.

In 2017, the Texas Bar Association suspended Burnett’s license to practice law. Burnett later relinquished his license to practice law instead of facing the possibility of being disbarred.

Burnett will not have to pay fines or court costs, but he was ordered to repay $200,000 in restitution.
