Sheriff: 3-Year-Old Shot Himself Accidentally While Playing With A Gun

CLYDE, TX – A three-year-old Clyde boy is being treated at Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth after he accidentally shot himself.

According to KTXS, the little boy found a .25 caliber pistol at his great-grandmother’s house and was playing with it when the gun went off. The bullet lodged itself between the boy’s brain and nose.

Callahan County Sheriff Terry Joy told media that Citizens EMS rushed the boy to Hendrick Medical Center, and he was then transferred to Fort Worth.

Sheriff Joy said the boy is “holding his own” and he is praying the boy will pull through.

“Horrific, horrible situation,” said Joy. "It could have been avoided if they’d had the gun secured and unloaded.”

It is unknown at this time whether charges will be filed.

Editor's Note: A previous version of the story identified the child as being age 4. The sheriff's office clarified that the child was actually 3 years old and would have turned 4 on March 14.)
