Man Gunned Down and Killed While Watching NYE Football at Home

ABILENE TX — A 20-year-old man was gunned down in a residence New Year’s Eve marking the fifth homicide of the year there. KTXS is on the scene and reported that Abilene Police do not believe the shooting was a random event.

Police said the man, David Devora, was shot through the walls of the house. KTXS reported it was through the front door when Devora got up to answer the door knock. According to KTXS, there was a total of three people in the house watching football when the shooting occurred. The victim was visiting there from Austin, police said.

A police spokesman at the scene speculated that Devora died instantaneously based upon where the bullet hit him, though he referred reporters to medical personal for confirmation. The bullet wound was above the chest, police said.

The shooting happened at around 8:20 p.m. in the 2500 block of Rountree, inside a residential area of northeast Abilene.

APD said the incident was likely an isolated incident and not a random shooting. Police said they did not suspect there is danger to others in the surrounding area.

Police did not identify a suspect saying it was too early in the investigation. Police said they do not yet know why Devora was targeted.

KTXS listed the four previous murders in Abilene in 2019:

  2. May 4 - Deadly shooting during party on N. 10th street
