CASE SOLVED: Blue Bell Licker Identified as San Antonio Juvenile by Lufkin Police
LUFKIN, TX -- The girl seen in a viral video of her licking an uncovered tub of Blue Bell Ice Cream has been identified and contacted by Lufkin Police, authorities said on Friday.
The girl was identified as a juvenile from the San Antonio area with ties to the Lufkin area from her boyfriend's family, the press release said.
Police have since talked to her and her adult boyfriend, who both admitted to the act caught on video.
"They were both forthcoming with what occurred and admitted to the act," Lufkin Police said in a statement.
Police have opted not to press charges as an adult against the minor suspect, leaving the case in the hands of the juvenile justice system. Her boyfriend could be subject to charges as an adult pending a decision by prosecutors and police.
"We do not intend to pursue charges against her as an 'adult' and therefore what happens from here is at the discretion of the juvenile justice system," Lufkin Police said. "We cannot speak for them as to what charge she will face in the juvenile justice system.
"As to whether her boyfriend will face charges, we are currently discussing his involvement with prosecutors."
What made the investigation tough for Lufkin Police was a similar social media name -- "within one letter of the suspect's screen name" -- posing as the actual suspect and claiming the crime. They were "catfished".
"There were roughly 4-6 women with similar screen names and appearances that law enforcement had to eliminate -- including the catfish -- before getting to the actual suspect," the release said.
Tampering with food is a felony in the state of Texas.
