Suspect Uses Gun to Commit Suicide While in Custody Big Spring Police

BIG SPRING, TX -- A Texas Rangers' investigation is underway after a suspect in custody of the Big Spring Police somehow managed to grab a gun to shoot and kill themselves.

The suspect was stopped around 2:35 p.m. on Friday by Big Spring PD in the 100 block of W. 16th St., KTXS reports. The driver was arrested for driving without a license.

After being arrested, authorities say the driver somehow managed to "retrieve a small firearm from their person and fire one shot," said Police Chief Chad Williams in a news release.

The driver was then transported to the Scenic Mountain Medical Center where they were pronounced dead.

The Texas Rangers have been called in to investigate the in-custody death while Big Spring Police will conduct an internal review.
