Police Identify Man Shot During Home Invasion, Accomplice Remains At-Large

SAN ANGELO, TX — He was first seen by police, lying dead, inside the doorway of an upstairs apartment at the Sedona Ranch, a middle class apartment community on San Angelo's southwest side.

Prior to arriving, police dispatch received a distress call from someone there, fearful that a prowler was attempting to break in their apartment. Shortly afterwards, more 9-1-1 calls reached San Angelo dispatch reporting multiple gunshots heard.

Police identified the dead man as 20-year-old Jadyn Phillips of San Angelo. An autopsy has been ordered.

Police revealed that Phillips and an accomplice, another man, had forced entry into the apartment. There to meet them was a 20-year-old male resident of that apartment. The resident fired several shots at the intruders in self defense. That is when Phillips was struck and killed by bullets. The other suspect, so far unnamed by police, fled the scene before police arrived.

The shooting happened just before midnight Friday night. The 20-year-old resident was not injured. However, police said the resident was an acquaintance of Phillips and police believe robbery was the motive for the break-in.

Early Saturday morning, police deployed at least one K9 init to search for the fleeing accomplice who remains at-large.

Police are seeking tips that will help them in the investigation. If you have any information about the second suspect’s name or whereabouts, please contact Detective Josh Shultz at (325) 657-4473. To remain anonymous, tip online or by text: text TIP SAPD to 888777 and follow the prompts.

I guess he thought from his employment at the YMCA that the "C" stood for Young Men's Criminal Association instead of Young Men's Christian Association.................

So he breaks into a house gets shot for doing so now there’s a go fund me really? Everyone that’s donates need to be sterilized and run out of town How stupid are people getting now and if guy wouldn’t have shot him I bet he’d be dead now then he’d be in jail for murder on tax dollars so called parents now a days don’t need to be parents

I thought I'd offer a bit of info, before the imminent shitstorm of grammatically challenged rubes begin their "he ain't neva done nothin'/only God can judge" diatribes...

1. "Texas' castle doctrine", or castle law, resolves individuals of responsibility for the death of an intruder, if they're placed in a situation where deadly force is necessary, during the commission of a break in or home invasion.

As for the POS who booked it, when his buddy got his ass handed to him...

2. "The law of parties" or “felony murder” law in Texas, allows for defendants to be liable for the death of an accomplice or victim during the commission of a felony, and subsequently may be charged with murder, without regard to whether or not the death was intentional, or personally committed by the defendant in question.

"Yes, they deserved to die and I hope they burn in hell!" - Samuel Jackson (A Time to Kill)

"Absolves," is the word I believe you're looking for... as in: "absolves individuals of responsibility fo the death of an intruder..." From one grammatically challenged rube to another, of course.

Maybe dissolves is the right word, Eric. Like when responsibility is dissolved somehow. What really happened here and why? Who runs this Barter Town, anyway??

See, this is the crap that gets plastered all over a story before anyone pops up to try and defend these guys, every time mind you. NOBODY has been on live taking to this kids defense for the actions that got him killed and the cynical comments start rushing in as though people were... There are natural consequences to "stupid", even though there are apologists out there, we wouldn't see near as much of their nonsense if they didn't feel like some idiot was being an antagonist. I'm more agitated by a doofus disrespecting the sanctity of life through the medium of S.A.L., than I am with the ones who do it by breaking in, at least one of those things can be easily combated. Most folks agree that if you are encroaching on others life, then you deserve what comes your way, even as a Christian I believe that God endowed us all with sense that should be used if you don't want to be dead inside a doorway someday, some use it, some don't. This is a good lesson to those that take the wrong path in life, although it's sad this kid could've had a full life ahead if he'd heeded that lesson before encroaching on others himself.
I will allow some room for cynicism based on a GoFundMe page being set up for a criminal that died in the commission of his crime.

I certainly agree with you Nate that if someone forces their way into a habitation, and the law clearly states that the person inside has a right to self defense, that the person making the entrance is to blame. Likely the GoFundMe page is for legal aid or something along those lines. One commenter here has raised some really good questions about the details of the purported break in, though definitely no one should be made unsafe by someone attacking them without very, very solid reasons for it.

Why would a kid like this break into an apartment? Inscrutable.
