SAN ANGELO, TX — A police officer on patrol attempted to pull over a black Chevrolet pickup and the driver sped away, forcing the officer into winding chase around the north side of downtown San Angelo late Sunday night.
According to the officer at the scene, the officer initiated a standard traffic stop when the driver sped away. The chase ensued and winded around N. Chadbourne, MLK Blvd., Farr, 19th St. and 23rd St. He was chased up and down the N. Chadbourne area. During the chase procedures, police were calling out street names over the radio faster than we could record them.
During the chase, the driver hit a parked motorcycle, police confirmed.
The chase, lasting less than 10 minutes, was soon over as police swarmed from all directions, in front and behind the Chevy on 8th St. between MLK and Chadbourne. The truck appeared to have little damage, although the passenger side rear window appeared to be pushed inward and broken.
Police said the driver was arrested and booked into the Tom Green County Jail for evading police in a vehicle. According to Texas Statutes, if convicted, Evading Arrest or Detention is upgraded to a State Jail Felony if the accused used a motor vehicle in the offense.
Why did the suspect run?
The jail logs state that arrested at 12:03 a.m. early Monday morning was Lorenzo Rodriguez, 27, charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Evading Arrest or Detention with Vehicle.
