SAN ANGELO, TX-- The Tom Green County Sheriff's Office is warning people of a phone scam that is circulating around the Tom Green County area.
The Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office received several reports of someone posing as Tom Green County Deputy using the name Terry Lowe, the caller states they are an employee with the Sheriff’s Office and calling residents to tell them they have outstanding arrest warrants for missing court.
Victims are being told they will go to jail unless they pay their fine immediately. The caller tells them to purchase gift cards, usually from Walmart, CVS, or Walgreens. A specific amount of cash is asked to be put on the gift card and to transfer the serial number to the caller who will then transfer the money from the gift card. The victims are then told once this process has been completed the warrant will be recalled.
These scammers are hard to catch because everything is done over the telephone. If you should receive one of these calls, please hang up on the caller and block their number. Then call the Sheriff’s Office at 325-655-8111 to report this incident. DO NOT give any personal information over the telephone.
Individuals with outstanding warrants are not contacted by telephone or email asking for payment by means of a gift card, money card or credit card.
