Police: Man Begs God for Forgiveness Before Assaulting Airport Policeman

SAN ANGELO, TX — A man ran into the Mathis Field airport terminal this morning and assaulted the officer on duty there, according to San Angelo police at the scene.

The man was witnessed acting erratic in the parking lot and Office Bruce Burkett was alerted. The man walked inside the terminal, saw the police officer, and uttered under his breath, “Forgive me Lord, for what I’m about to do.”

He wrestled with the officer a bit and if not for the help of the person attending the rental car booth inside the airport terminal building who came to the aid of the officer, the incident may have had a different outcome.

Burkett suffered minor injuries.

Police responded in force and took the man into custody where he was booked into the Tom Green County Jail. Charges are pending.

Police said the man was not a ticketed passenger and they were trying to determine what business he had at the airport terminal building. The incident happened at 8 a.m. Wednesday morning.
