Family Dog Attacks, Kills 2-Year-Old Girl

ALVIN, TX-- A 2-year-old Alvin girl has died after being mauled by her family dog, the Brazoria County Sheriff confirmed to the Houston Chronicle.

The dog, believed to be a leopard cur breed, attacked the toddler at the home in the 3900 block of Morning Dove Street in Alvin around 5 p.m. on Friday.

"It's a terrible incident where the family dog attacked a 2-year-old. We have no idea why," said Brazoria Sheriff Charles Wagner to the Chronicle. "It's been a long time since we've had anything like this happen. It's a tragedy for all involved."

Lt. Varon Snelgrove said the dog had no known history of aggression.

The attack occured as the mother and her children were returning from a trip to the grocery store and they were carrying bags, according to the report. The dog's jaw latched onto the kid's upper torso and throat.

"There's nothing the family could have done," Snelgrove said to the Chronicle. "It's just a horrific, horrific incident."

The name of the child is not being released by the Sheriff's Office at this time.

The child will be given a routine autopsy by the Galveston County Medical Examiner. The dog was euthanized and will be tested for rabies.
