Mentally Ill Man Charged with Murder Back in Jail

SAN ANGELO, TX -- A San Angelo man charged with murdering his mother's boyfriend in 2016 is back in the Tom Green County jail.

31-year-old Thomas Gene Riddle was committed to the Vernon State Mental Hospital in Kerrville in August of 2017.  He was found incompetent to stand trial at the time.

Riddle is charged with murder in the beating death of his mother's boyfriend, Jerry Don Barr, in March of 2016.

In July 2017, Judge Weatherby denied a request to reduce Riddle’s bond.  Riddle’s defense attorney Brandon Hudson told the court that he expects Riddle to be declared insane at the time the crime was committed.

Furthermore, Hudson plans on entering a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity.

Riddle is accused of bludgeoning his mother's boyfriend to death in a south San Angelo Apartment in March of 2016.

Riddle is back in the Tom Green County jail awaiting a competency hearing on August 10.

Another sensationalized and misleading headline by Green. He makes it sound like the guy was out and running free, not locked up in a mental institution.

I did as well. After the first reading, I was asking "How the hell did he get out of the loony bin?" Second read cleared it up. One line stating that he had been transferred from Kerrville to the TGC jail pending the hearing would have been nice. Of course his appearance does seem to verify his claim of insanity.... Kind of reminds me of a young Christopher Lloyd. (Riddle, that is....not Yantis)
