Attempted Capital Murderer Leaves County Jail for Prison

 

SAN ANGELO, TX -- A woman who pleaded guilty to an attempted capital murder of a police officer or fireman charge was released Monday from the Tom Green County Jail into the custody of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.  

61-year-old Brenda Joyce Wright took a plea deal on May 16 that sends her to prison for 15 years in exchange for a guilty plea.  Wright and her husband Gary Ray Wright,68, were charged with attempted capital murder following a January 2017 standoff with law enforcement on 21st Street in San Angelo.  

According to court records, Gary Ray Wright called 911 after setting his house on fire in an intentional confrontation with law enforcement.  He wanted suicide by cop according to law enforcement reports. Gary Wright was ordered to drop his weapon and refused. San Angelo police officers shot him.  Gary Wright and Brenda Wright were transported to the hospital and later arrested.

Gary Wright remains jailed.  He has a final pretrial hearing August 28 with a jury trial set to begin September 19.  He is charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer or fireman which is a first degree felony.
