Grape Creek Infant Seriously Injured When Family Dog Bites Her Face

GRAPE CREEK, TX -- An eight month old Grape Creek girl was seriously injured Saturday evening when one of the family dogs bit her on the face.

According to reports from the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Lylanie Smith was dispatched to the 10000 block of Caribou Trail in Grape Creek to investigate the report of a dog biting an 8 month old child on the face.  

The Deputy was asked to find a landing zone for AirMed One and investigate the call.  Smith reports that witnesses at the scene reported the dog was locked in a bedroom in the home and the child was also in the house with her mother.  The dog was described an old black labrador. The child’s father was reported to be irate and kept asking the deputy to shoot the dog.

Smith met the child and her mother in the house.  The infant had a large laceration on her forehead and had dried blood all over her head, face and clothing.  Smith reports that Medic 6 arrived and paramedics took the child from her mother and assessed her at the scene.  

Upon the advice of the medics, Smith cancelled AirMed One and the child was transported to Shannon Medical Center by ambulance.  

Deputy Smith found the dog’s owner who said the dog was not vaccinated for rabies.  Smith informed the owner the dog would have to be quarantined at the San Angelo Animal Shelter.  There were seven dogs on the property and none of them were vaccinated. Smith issued the owner a citation for failure to provide proof of rabies vaccination.   

The child’s condition has not been released.
