SAN ANGELO, TX — The last individual was apprehended at around 3:30 p.m. Monday morning, Chief Juvenile Probation Officer Monica Schniers said this afternoon.
Nine juveniles escaped the Tom Green County Juvenile Detention Center, 1253 W. 19th St., last night at around 9:30 p.m. “Law enforcement was truly amazing,” Schniers said of how quickly the boys were rounded up.
The prison breakout was caused when one of the juvenile males in a fight with another inmate in the kitchen busted a window that led into the control room. Then another juvenile crawled through the broken window and flipped a switch that opened all the doors on one side of the facility. The building has two sides with 12-13 rooms each. The doors were opened on one side where 12 minors were incarcerated. There are 25 total beds there. Of the 12 who experienced their doors unlock, three stayed put and did not escape.
Schniers said afternoon hearings are being held for each of the nine on charges of escape from a confinement facility, a felony.
No injuries were reported of any of the children, the guards, or pursuing law enforcement personnel. The San Angelo Police Department and Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the roundup of escaped juveniles.
