Black and White: Colorado City Police Nab Drive By Shooters Who Shot a 2-year-old in Big Spring

COLORADO CITY, TX -- Two men wanted in connection with a shooting in Big Spring were captured Tuesday afternoon in Colorado City according to the Big Spring Police Department.

Big Spring Police on Friday responded to a shooting at the KFC on S. Gregg Street according to the Big Spring PD.

Last Friday at approximately 7:25 p.m., Big Spring Police Department Officers were dispatched to the KFC (1711 S. Gregg) in reference to shots fired. While en-route numerous calls came into dispatch informing occupants in a tan in color SUV was shooting at the occupants of a white passenger car and a black passenger car and all three vehicles had left the area.

The Big Spring Police Department Criminal Investigations Division and the Department of Public Safety Texas Rangers Division responded to assist with this investigation.

It is believed at approximately 7:25 p.m. Friday, the white and black cars were sitting in the north parking lot of KFC when the tan SUV approached from the alley just east of the parking lot. While the occupants in the white and black cars were visiting, two hispanic males identified as Angel Villa 20 years of age and Rafael Jesus Hernandez Jr. 20 years of age opened fire on both vehicles.

As the vehicles departed from the KFC parking lot in attempt to get away, Villa and Hernandez followed and continued firing at the vehicles while eastbound on East 18th Street. The driver of the black car drove the child to Scenic Mountain Medical Center for treatment. The child was flown by helicopter to Covenant Medical in Lubbock Texas and was in serious condition. The driver of the white car continued to run from Villa and Hernandez until his vehicle was disabled in the 1000 block of E. 20th. Big Spring Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded and transported the adult male to SMMC for treatment. The adult male was treated there also and is in stable condition.

About three o’clock this afteroon the Big Spring Police Department received an anonymous tip of the whereabouts of Rafael Hernandez and Angel Villa in Colorado City Texas. The Big Spring Police Department notified the Colorado City Police Department of the suspected whereabouts and asked for their assistance.

The Colorado City Police Department with the help of the Department of Public Safety responded to their last known location and located the suspects along with the suspect vehicle. A short vehicle pursuit initiated as a result and then Rafael Hernandez and Angel Villa fled on foot.

A perimeter was established and with the help of the Big Spring Police Department, Howard County Sheriff’s Office, Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado City Police Department, Texas Department of Criminal Justice Canine Unit, Department of Public Safety Troopers, Aviation and Texas Rangers Division, at approximately 6:00 p.m., both Hernandez and Villa were apprehended and taken into custody in the area of 10th and Cherry.

The Big Spring Police Department thanks the citizens for all their tips and all the agencies responsible for taking Hernandez and Villa into custody. This continues to be an ongoing investigation and there is no further information available at this time.
