Dumpster Fires and Flaming Toilet Paper Keep Firefighters Busy

SAN ANGELO, TX — San Angelo police responded to a call about a dumpster fire in the parking lot of Plaza Square Apartments, 4001 Sul Ross St. just after 4 p.m. The San Angelo Fire Department responded quickly and doused the dumpster with water.

The cause of the fire? Someone may have set it.

Meanwhile, across town in Kirby Park, 1401 Edmund Blvd., another tale of mischief was unfolding at about the same time.

Apparently, a toilet paper roll was set on fire inside the bathrooms at Kirby Park. Police swarmed Kirby Park after a 9-1-1 call was received. Police were unable to locate the person who called in the 9-1-1 call and found only the blazing roll of toilet paper inside the restroom building. The fire department made a fast attack on the completely engulfed roll and extinguished it quickly. There were no injuries.

The fire marshal’s office is investigating the incidents.

We do not believe the two incidents are related.

Firefighters responding to these calls missed portions of three NFL football games. The Dallas Cowboys play at 7:30 p.m. According to the look on their faces, San Angelo’s firefighters hope that would-be dumpster and bathroom arsonists will refrain until at least the end of that game, expected to conclude at around 11 p.m.
