SAN ANGELO, TX — Recently obtained court documents detail the tragic early morning incident that left one local high schooler dead in the 1800 block of Edmund.
On Wednesday morning, police officers with the San Angelo Police Department found 18-year-old Victor Omar Duarte lying deceased on the kitchen floor of a residence on Edmund Boulevard.
Christian Castro, who is a resident of the Edmund Blvd. residence, said he was hosting a small party, but fell asleep while other people were still in his house. Castro advised investigating officers that he was later awakened by Xavior Arzola who told him that "he had shot [Duarte] by accident and that [Duarte] was deceased."
Avonlea Edgecomb, who had directed the police to Duarte's body, said that she and Arzola had been together at an apartment in the Angelo Place Apartments when Arzola had gotten into a physical altercation with an unknown person. Edgecomb advised that Arzola had remained agitated after the altercation. Edgecomb and Arzola, following the physical altercation, left the apartment complex and headed to the Edmund Blvd. residence.
Once the two teenagers arrived at the Edmund residence, Arzola began displaying a handgun to the other occupants of the house. As Arzola was showcasing his handgun to his friends, he attempted to "spin [the handgun] on his finger." The gun fired and shot Duarte in the head.
Edgecomb said she, Trinidad Dehoyos and Eirin Albritton were in the kitchen area when the incident happened.
Dehoyos told officers in a statement that he "heard a bang and looked up and saw [Arzola] holding a handgun pointed in the direction of [Duarte.]
When officers interviewed Arzola, Arzola voluntarily waived his Miranda Rights and told police that "he picked up the gun from the bar top and then the gun went off." He added that "he had killed [Duarte]."
Furthermore, Arzola notified officers that he had been using Xanax and cocaine and had consumed alcohol prior the incident. The consumption of these three substances can cause the consumer to lose inhibitions and act recklessly, the court documents stated.
A search warrant was issued for the residence where officers found a plastic baggie with white residue that field tested positive for the presence of cocaine. The plastic baggie was located in a trash can in the kitchen where Duarte was found.
In tweets following the next day, several friends of Duarte who were at the residence during the incident, voiced their thoughts on twitter. *Warning: Vulgar Language*
