City of Big Spring Falls Victim to Wire Fraud, Over $35,000 Stolen

BIG SPRING, TEXAS -- On April 10, the City of Big Spring fell victim to wire fraud resulting in $36,200 of city funds to be transferred from their bank account via an email-scam.

The Big Spring Police Department (BSPD) received the initial report and immediately turned it over to the State and Federal Officials for investigative purposes, according to a BSPD press release.

At this time, the Department of Public Safety, Texas Rangers Division and the Homeland Security Federal Agency are still pursuing multiple suspects in this case. Currently, a total of  $28,090.28 has been returned to the City.

Big Spring's Chief of Police Chad Williams wrote in the press release that he expects multiple arrests to take place as a result of the investigation

According to Federal Officials, this type of “Business Email Compromise” or “BEC” scam is increasingly common. The City of Big Spring has utilized this opportunity to enhance internal procedures in an attempt to prevent similar scams in the future.

The investigation is still ongoing, and no further comment is available at this time.
