SAN ANGELO, TEXAS -- At approximately 3:40 a.m. this morning, San Angelo Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 2300 block of N. Chadbourne Street when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a parked vehicle and fence at 2320 N. Chadbourne.
As the officer rushed to check the driver's welfare, the driver exited through the passenger side door and took off running, a San Angelo Police Department (SAPD) press release stated.
After additional units were called, a perimeter was quickly established. The driver was located a short time later, hiding beneath a tree. He was taken into custody without further incident and identified as Nathaniel Devon Childress, 18, of San Angelo.
During the field investigation, it was discovered the white 2012 Ford Van had been stolen from First Baptist Church, 37 W. Harris, sometime during the night.
Childress was transported to the Tom Green County Jail and charged with Unauthorized Use of Motor Vehicle, Evading Arrest Detention, and Duty on Striking Unattended Vehicle.
Although flashlights were used during the pursuit, a Higher Power most likely guided Police to Childress’s swift apprehension.
