SAN ANGELO, TX - Since our last update, local law enforcement arrested and booked 57 people into the Tom Green County Jail. The majority of the arrestees had outstanding warrants, including 55-year-old Emilio Cortez. Tom Green Count Sheriff's Deputies arrested and booked Cortez into the TGCJ at 4:39 p.m. for an outstanding bench warrant and Aggravated Sexual Assault of a Child younger than 14.
According to court documents, Assistant District Attorney Ashley Knight submitted an application for a bench warrant with the 51st District Court. Cortez is awaiting trial for the sexual assault, and proceedings begin on April 4, 2017. Thus, the State requested the District Court to issue a bench warrant so Cortez could remain in custody until the start of proceedings.
In January of 2017, Cortez was indicted for first degree felony Aggravated Sexual Assault of a girl younger than 14 years of age. He sexually assaulted the victim on or about September 21, 2010.
This is Cortez's 8th arrest in Tom Green County, and his bond is set at $25,000.

Overall, out of the 57 arrests, 35 people went to jail for outstanding warrants, 19 for new crimes, and three people were booked for both warrants and new crimes.
