SAN ANGELO, TX - A 44-year-old San Angelo man was arrested this morning after engaging San Angelo Police in a vehicle and foot pursuit.
SAPD Public Information Officer Tracy Gonzalez said, just after 10:30 a.m. this morning, a patrol officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on an older model passenger car in the 1800 block of Martin St.
"The driver of the vehicle failed to stop for the officer, and a vehicle pursuit ensued in the surrounding neighborhood--primarily through the alleyways of the residential areas," said Officer Gonzalez.
At some point during the pursuit, the officer lost sight of the suspect vehicle, but then regained sight of it at various points during the pursuit, Gonzalez noted.
"At one point, officers converged on the area, but the pursuit was ended due to safety for the citizens in the residential area," she added.
However, officers remained in the area and attempted to locate the suspect. While attempting to locate the vehicle, a citizen flagged down one of the officers and alerted him to the presence of the vehicle in an alleyway of a residence in the 2300 block of Webster.
"The suspect was not inside the vehicle," Gonzalez said. "Through a witness statement, it was believed the suspect fled northbound because he was not seen going westbound in the area."
Officers continued to search for the suspect, and, at one point, observed someone in the 1800 block of North St. who matched the description of the suspect. As the subject made eye contact with an officer, he then evaded on foot and a foot pursuit ensued.
"The suspect was taken into custody a short time later in the 1800 block of North St., and he was identified as Michael Trammell, 44," Gonzalez stated. "Mr. Trammell had outstanding warrants for his arrest, so he was arrested for that."
Currently, SAPD's Criminal Investigations is conducting an investigation, and additional charges will be forthcoming for the suspect evading in a vehicle and on foot. There was also a substance found in Trammell's vehicle that is being tested.
"There are certain things we believe may be tied into this; however, I cannot speak to that right now, and there may be additional charges forthcoming," Gonzalez said.
After the pursuit, Trammell complained of health issues, so medics were called to the scene to "check him out." Once medics arrived, he decided he did not want to be transported by ambulance to the hospital. He will be transported by one of the officers for medical evaluation, said Gonzalez.
Additionally, an officer received minor injury as a result of the foot pursuit, or when taking the suspect into custody, so he will be evaluated as well.
This will be Trammell's 24th arrest in Tom Green County. He has a history of drugs, burglary, unauthorized use of vehicle, and evading police.
UPDATE @ 5:06 P.M.
This evening, Officer Tracy Gonzalez provided more details into this morning's vehicle/foot pursuit involving 44-year-old Michael J. Trammell.
She reiterated the events mentioned in our earlier story, and said the car Trammell drove was a silver 2005 Toyota Camry. She also explained that the reason the pursuit terminated early had to do with unsafe speeds taking place in the 1800 block of Martin Street.
Additionally, after the citizen flagged down officers, police located the Camry abandoned and crashed into a fence in the north alley of the 2300 block of Webster Street.
After the foot pursuit, Trammell was transported to Shannon Medical Center for evaluation after complaining of shortness of breath. One officer was also treated at the scene for minor injuries sustained in the pursuit.
Subsequent to the investigation, Trammell was charged with Evading Arrest Detention with Vehicle, Evading Arrest Detention on Foot, State Jail Felony Possession of Controlled Substance PG1, No Seatbelt, and an outstanding warrant. In addition to these charges, Trammell will receive a citation for Duty to Stop and Leave Information upon Striking Fixed Object.
