SAPD Releases January Buckle Down & Stay Strapped In Seat Belt Survey Results

SAN ANGELO, TX - This afternoon, the San Angelo Police Department announced that approximately 668 seat belt observations were conducted in San Angelo during the month of January as part of Buckle Down & Stay Strapped In.

"Results indicate that the overall seat belt use rate is 96.1 percent," said Public Information Officer Tracy Gonzalez. "This is 5.4 percent higher than the state average of 90.7 percent, 9.1 percent higher than the national average of 87 percent, and 3 percent higher than San Angelo’s October baseline of 93.1 percent."

She noted that the January surveys took place at five locations in the area. In addition to the general use rate data, findings showed the following:

• Women – 96.9 percent
• Men – 95.4 percent
• Highest Age Group for Belt Use: 60 +
• Lowest Age Group for Belt Use: <24
• Highest Vehicle for Belt Use: SUV
• Lowest Vehicle for Belt Use: Passenger Car

"The next round of Surveys will be released in March 2017," added Gonzalez. "Take the seat belt challenge, buckle up, every trip, every time and encourage your family and friends to do the same. You might just save a life."

The Buckle Down & Stay Strapped In is made up of the San Angelo Police Department and a network of community partners, including SAISD and Live Design and Print Shop.

Gonzalez noted, "This public safety initiative was created to increase belt use, save lives, and reduce injuries in San Angelo."
