SAPD: Harris Found in Possession of Majority of Stolen Funds

SAN ANGELO, TX — San Angelo police have surrounded a branch of Texas Bank at 1815 N Chadbourne St. Sources at the scene said police cruisers and officers are located all around the branch bank’s structure. The police responded at approximately 5 p.m.

Police stated the investigation is for a robbery where no weapons were shown.

Texas Bank is San Angelo’s locally owned bank with three locations in San Angelo. The Chadbourne location is named the “Lake View Branch” by the bank. The main office is on Sherwood Way and there is a College Hills branch, too.

Update: 6:05 p.m.

At 4:22 p.m. police were headed to Texas Bank responding to an alarm. While on the way, the call was upgraded to a robbery.

Police spokesman Sgt. Travis Griffith said police are searching for a suspect. He described the suspect as a slender build Hispanic male with light complexion. He is in his late-30s or early-40s, Griffith said. He is also bald. The suspect was last seen wearing blue jeans and a long-sleeved gray shirt. He is between 5’ 8” and 5’ 10” in height.

Police are gathering surveillance video of the suspect and will release it as soon as possible to us.

Update: 8:50 p.m.

This evening, before 9 p.m., Sgt. Travis Griffith, at the Taco Bell on 19th St. & Bryant, not too far from where a robbery took place at Texas Bank earlier this evening, said SAPD arrested the suspect involved.

"Right now, we have him in custody, and we want to thank everybody for their help," said Sgt. Griffith.

Sgt. Griffith said there's a lot going on at this time, and more information will be forthcoming when available.

UPDATE: Jan. 21 @ 1:15 a.m.

At 11:53 p.m. Friday night, David Allen Harris, 41, was arrested for Robbery, Possession of Controlled Substance PG 1< 1G, and on an outstanding parole violation warrant. Harris, who is a white male, matches the description provided by SAPD Sgt. Travis Griffith, and the video released on SAPD's Facebook page (see above).

Based on jail records, this is not Harris' first time robbing a local business. In 2009 Harris was arrested for two counts of Aggravated Robbery and a White Warrant. Harris, on or about July 21, 2009, entered the Walgreens on 12 N. Abe Street. According to the complaint, Harris wandered around the store and made his way toward a store associate; he asked for assistance with phone cards. At that point, Harris displayed a knife and told the employee to go to the photo department. Harris then took the cash from the cash register, fled the store, and rode away on his bike.

Harris was indicted for the crime, a first degree felony enhanced to habitual, in June 2009, and his bond was set at $75,000. In October of 2009, Harris pleaded guilty to the charge, which abandoned the felony enhancement, and was sentenced to 10 years in the TDCJ.

At this time, bond has yet to be set. We will continue to provide more information once available.

Update: Jan. 21 @ 9:57 p.m.

This evening, SAPD Sgt. Travis Griffith described the events leading up to Harris' arrest.

He said, during the course of this investigation, SAPD's Criminal Investigation Division, along with the FBI, learned of a possible suspect and began pursuing active leads.

"After deploying many resources, detectives learned of a possible location of the suspect," said Griffith. "Officers located and took into custody the robbery suspect, who was identified as [Harris]. The suspect was found to be in possession of a majority of the stolen funds as well as other evidence. The suspect was arrested for robbery, and an outstanding warrant."
