SAN ANGELO, TX – This evening, at about 6 p.m., San Angelo Police officers dispatched to the 600 block of Upton Street for the report of a subject with a gunshot wound.
Sgt. Antoine Callum said officials, upon arrival, “learned a male had a non-life-threatening [gunshot] wound to his upper left chest.” The man sought assistance from a neighbor, who then contacted police.
Medics transported the man to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. Sgt. Callum did not wish to disclose which hospital.
“At this time, [the shooting] is still under investigation,” said Sgt. Callum. “The wound is possibly self-inflicted.”
Since officials are still investigating and believe the shooting may have been accidental, they do not have any suspects at large, and the public is not in danger.
At the scene, K9 units were present. When asked why that was the case, Sgt. Callum said officers usually take the dogs out for training to look for articles of clothing and for firearms. If there is a gun involved, it’s easier for a dog to find it, he said.
When asked if the man was home alone during the time of the shooting, Sgt. Callum would not comment, nor would he provide a description of the shooting victim. He also said he hasn’t had a chance to speak to family members to know the man’s state of mind and determine if the shooting was accidental or intentional.
“We’ll release a statement later,” stated Sgt. Callum.
