ABILENE, TX- Yesterday, Lavanders Muskin was found guilty of aggravated sexual assault in Abilene. In hopes of sending a message about sexual assault crimes, the jury sentenced Muskin to 99 years in prison.
Muskin, 29, was on trial for sexually assaulting an Abilene woman in an alley near her apartment, as reported by KTXS.
Muskin was previously indicted on multiple other charges. A Taylor County Prosecutor said that Muskins may also be tried for those additional charges, but at a later date.
During the trial, the victim took the stand and gave her statement. KTXS reported that the victim said Muskin first approached her as she walked to a convenience store on N. 10th St. in July 2015. She said he asked if she wanted to buy drugs and then attempted to solicit sex from her for money. She refused both.
The victim told the jury that when she arrived at her apartment, Muskin was waiting there with a gun. He forced her into an alley and sexually assaulted her, saying he would kill her if she moved or screamed.
After deliberating for three hours, the jury came back and found Muskin guilty of aggravated sexual assault. In determining Muskin’s sentence, the jury took into account his criminal record and sentenced him to 99 years in prison.
KTXS said, “One juror told KTXS that the jury wanted the sentence to send a message that the county would strictly punish sex offenders. The victim said she was happy with Muskin's sentence and felt that justice had been served.”
After half of Muskin’s time is served, he will be eligible for parole.
