Confrontation with Wanted Suspect Leads to Shooting and Death

SAN ANGELO, TX — Multiple agencies just responded to a report of gunfire near Schlotzsky’s, 302 W. Harris St. in downtown San Angelo.

At the scene, we witnessed a male on the ground being treated by San Angelo EMS. He was just covered with a white sheet.

A witness nearby heard at least three shots. But we observed four bullet holes in a car near the restaurant.

This is a breaking story.

Update 2:32 p.m.

Crime scene tape has been wrapped around the restaurant while multiple undercover and marked vehicles and LE personnel are milling around.

The woman arrested was driven away at about 2:20 p.m.

Traffic heading north on Koenigheim is constrained with two of the five lanes blocked for LE personnel. W. Harris Ave. is not blocked.

Update 3:04 p.m.

A San Angelo Police Department spokesman said the incident at Schlotzsky’s today involved an SAPD officer. He said the officer is not injured.

Police said no suspects are on the run and the public is safe.

SAPD Internal Affairs and the DPS are on the scene. The Texas Rangers are on the way to take over the investigation to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest in the shooting investigation.

Until the Rangers have started their investigation of the incident, police are tight-lipped about what exactly happened. They anticipate DPS will assume the role of informing the press.

Update 4:02 p.m.

No further information is going to come from the crime scene. We are awaiting information from DPS.

Update 5:40 p.m.

Sgt. Travis Griffith with SAPD said today, at about 1:58 p.m., members of the San Angelo Police Department's Street Crimes Division, along with Special Agents from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Special Agents from the Department of Homeland Security, and Deputies with the US Marshals were working to arrest a known wanted suspect.

"The suspect's identity is not being released at this time," said Sgt. Griffith. "The suspect was wanted for Felony Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon and a suspect in another Aggravated Assault that had occurred in recent days."

Detectives and Special Agents encountered the armed male suspect and a confrontation ensued. During the encounter, the suspect brandished a handgun and multiple shots were fired, said Griffith.

"The Detectives and members of the various agencies involved fired shots that struck the suspect," added Sgt. Griffith. "The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene by Justice of the Peace Howard, and the Texas Rangers are leading the investigation."

Griffith said it is normal practice for the Texas Rangers to lead the investigation along with the San Angelo Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division and the Professional Standards Division. No officers were injured and there are no suspects at large.

The investigation is on going and we will provide more updates when available.

Must get to the Range and practice often if one wishes to be in a gun battle with our Sworn Officers. If practice is not possible, then be a slow learner and take on our Sworn Officers with limited gun battle skills. When one loses such a confrontation, the results are usually cause for permanent incapacitation or death.

San Angelo has some of the finest and professional officers around. Hopefully a bunch of them who can, will pull up stakes and move on to other cities that will appreciate them for what they give of themselves and show them the true gratitude they deserve to serve for a city who will appreciate them instead of lie, cheat and underpay them such as this city does.... God bless you guys out there who are dedicated to protecting and serving this community. I applaud each of you for what you do even though your city leaders enjoy sending you down the river in a boat full of holes.........
