Abilene Man Charged in Brutal 2014 Murder Pleads Out/Gets Life in Prison

ABILENE, TX - An Abilene man charged in a brutal 2014 murder pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence in the crime and received a life prison sentence. However, all other charges were dropped.

According to a news source in the Abilene area, jury selection for John Patrick Gutierrez's case was scheduled to begin this morning; however, Gutierrez pleaded out.

This case stems back to 2014. Abilene Police said Gutierrez beat Carey Rod Tate to death with a wrench in Dec. 2014. Investigators believe Gutierrez placed Tate's body in a dog kennel, drove to Jones County near Hawley and buried the body.

Abilene Police also believe Gutierrez's ex-girlfriend witnessed the killing; however, she waited to come forward with information because she was afraid he would hurt or kill her.
