Handcuffed San Angelo Man Attempts to Evade Arrest

San Angelo, Texas - Over the weekend, local law enforcement made 42 arrests. One of the arrestees who had outstanding warrants, Robert John Markwell, 23, made a failed attempt to avoid the Tom Green County Jail.

San Angelo Police Sgt. Matt Vaughn said Officer Cortinas contacted Markwell on Aug. 21 at approximately 4:45 a.m. while Markwell and a female subject were walking near the intersection of E. Avenue D and Powell Street.

“Markwell was found to have an active, confirmed county warrant for his arrest,” said Sgt. Vaughn.

As Officer Cortinas attempted to handcuff Markwell for the warrant, Markwell began to pull away.

“Officer Cortinas was able to take Markwell to the ground with the assistance of another officer and get him handcuffed,” said Vaughn.

As the officers placed Markwell in the back of the patrol car, he pulled away from them and began to run while handcuffed.

“Markwell made it a short distance before he lost his balance and fell,” noted Sgt. Vaughn. “He was then taken back to the patrol car. Markwell was found to be in possession of a small amount of marijuana.”

Markwell’s warrants were related to Possession of Marijuana < 2 ounces and Possession/Delivery of Drug Paraphernalia, so he was slapped with another Possession of Marijuana < 2 ounces charge, Resisting Arrest Search or Transport, Escape from Custody and Possession of a Controlled Substance PG 3<28G.
