SAPD Canines Duke and Xander Sniff Out Drugs During Weekend Traffic Stops

Thanks to two San Angelo Police Service Dogs Duke and Xander, officers arrested two San Angelo residents on narcotics charges over the weekend.

Officer Tracy Gonzalez, public information officer for SAPD, said, "22-year-old Jacob W. Woods was booked on First Degree Felony Manufacture Delivery Controlled Substance PG1 and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia after K9 Duke alerted his handler to the presence of contraband during an open-air sniff of Woods’s vehicle during a traffic stop early Sunday morning."

The stop occurred around 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of N. Bryant Blvd. and W. 3rd Street after Woods ran a red light, Gonzalez stated.

"During a probable cause search of the vehicle, the officer located drug paraphernalia and a plastic bag that contained suspected narcotics that field-tested positive for approximately 6.8 grams of methamphetamine," she added.

Woods received citations for Driving While License Invalid, No Insurance, and Expired Registration before he was transported to the Tom Green County Jail.

In another stop, Sabrina R. George, 34, was booked for State Jail Felony Possession of Controlled Substance PG1 and Class A Misdemeanor Possession of a Controlled Substance PG3 after K9 Xander alerted his handler to the presence of contraband during an open-air sniff of George’s vehicle Sunday night.

Gonzalez said the stop occurred just after 9:15 p.m. near Caddo and N. Jefferson when police responded to the area for the report of a possible intoxicated driver in a black Chevy Suburban.

"When the officer approached the vehicle, they noticed the registration sticker was expired and George failed to produce a Driver’s License," said Gonzalez. "George appeared to be under the influence of an intoxicant other than alcohol and a K9 Team was requested."

During a probable cause search of the vehicle, officers located drug paraphernalia suspected narcotics that field-tested positive for less than 1 gram of methamphetamine, and pills identified as Xanax and Carisoprodol.
