Man Who Shot 32-Year-Old Woman in Head Released to Another Agency

 

On Aug. 1, 2016, 26-year-old Christopher Ray Chavez and 21-year-old Juan Manuel Bustos-Portales, both arrested for serious offenses, were released, one to another agency, and the other on bond.

Chavez, who was arrested in connection to the shooting of a 32-year-old woman in the head on June 13, 2016, was released today to another agency. His bond remains at $375,000. The incident occurred on Tres Rios Drive. For more information on this incident, click here and here.

Chavez’s original charges included an outstanding warrant for an unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. He was also arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance < 1G, Tampering/Fabricate Physical Evidence, Unlawful Possession of Firearm by Felon, Aggravated Assault w/Deadly Weapon and a US Marshal Hold.

This was Chavez’s 6th arrest in Tom Green County.

Bustos-Portales, who was driving under the influence of alcohol, caused a crash on U.S. 87 in Wall early Sunday morning. He was arrested on nine counts of Intoxication Assault with a Vehicle and two counts of Injury to a child/elderly/disabled (see more here).

Bustos-Portales was also released from TGCJ on $125,000 in combined surety bonds. This was his first arrest in Tom Green County.

Over the weekend, and including Bustos-Portales, 82 people took a trip to the TGCJ. Also, included in those arrests was Josh Caleb Joiner, who fled River Crest Hospital and stole a vehicle in an attempt to flee Tom Green County Sheriff’s Deputies.

Out of the 82 arrests, 45 people had outstanding warrants, 26 had new complaints, and 11 people had both new complaints and outstanding warrants.

Correction: Originally, San Angelo LIVE! reported Christopher Ray Chavez was released on a $375,000 bond. He was actually released to another agency. Bustos-Portales, however, was released on bond, and eight of his intoxication manslaughter charges were dropped.
