Statement From Chief Frank Carter.
"Last Sunday was another sad day, as we watched the news unfold of yet another ambush style murder of law enforcement officers.
On the heels of the tragedies in Dallas and the Robertson Correction Unit, we have not had time to grieve and bury our brothers and sisters while being faced with a similar situation in Baton Rouge.
When I speak, I often talk about the 99 percent. That is the percentage of population that stands with law enforcement, on the Blue Line or behind them; the percentage that helps separate calm from chaos. It is the one percent that wishes harm and evil upon humans and police officers.
In light of these recent tragedies, the San Angelo Police Department is not changing its police tactics. Our department remains confident and vigilant and we will continue to police in a professional manner.
The Officers, who I call professionals—although not beyond mistakes, are humans just like you and me. They raised their right hand only to protect you and make our community a better place. They are fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters just like everyone else. I cannot fathom a person that wishes to take the life of a public servant or any life for that matter, which unfortunately has become too frequent in today's society. When respect for law enforcement has been removed, the unfortunate side effect is life in a lawless society.
I call for unity and stronger relationships between all law enforcement, individuals, organizations, and churches— regardless of race, gender or religion. We must all have open lines of communication and work together to understand our differences. Words are not enough. Intention is not enough. We must combine the two and take action to repair the damage if healing is to take place.
I ask all citizens, if you hear of any threats on law enforcement or observe anything suspicious, please call the police.
I have received an overwhelming number of calls and prayer requests from our community, and for that, I am grateful of your continued support. I ask that you continue to pray for the safety of all law enforcement throughout the Nation."
