A grand jury met last month on June 6, and 67 people were indicted on a variety of felony charges. Overall, drugs topped the list of offenses followed by theft.
However, there are a few noteworthy cases to be on the lookout for.
The Continuous Sex Abuse of a Child Under 14
Randall Wayne Worley, 54, was indicted for the continuous sexual assault of a child younger than 14.
According to the indictment, Worley, during a period that was 30 days or more in duration, from, on or about October 6, 2009, and through, on or about February 1, 2012, committed two or more acts of sexual abuse against a girl through sexual contact.
Worley is being charged with a First Degree Felony, and has been arrested four times. His crimes include two counts of Assault Causes Bodily Injury, Criminal Trespass and this charge.
An Accident Involving Death
On or about Aug. 2, 2015, 40-year-old Christopher Lee Mata, was involved in an accident that resulted in the death of Joe Carlos Lopez.
According to court documents, Mata “knowing said accident had occurred, intentionally and knowingly [left] the scene of said accident without giving his name and address to any person, and without rendering reasonable assistance to Lopez when it was then apparent that he was in need of medical treatment.”
On the day of the accident, San Angelo Traffic Officer Joshua Loudermilk was dispatched to the 1300 block of South Chadbourne for a hit and run traffic accident resulting in the death of Lopez. Loudermilk learned that Lopez had been struck by an unknown vehicle, and the suspect was traveling south on Chadbourne Street.
Loudermilk also learned there was recorded video from a building located at 1311 South Chadbourne, and obtained the video to observe the hit and run accident.
“The vehicle appeared to be a white sport utility vehicle matching the description of a Ford Explorer or Ford Expedition,” said the complaint.
Loudermilk also learned from SAPD Investigator Steven Quade that the headlight lens on the suspected vehicle was damaged, and part of the assembly was recovered from the location. Quade stated the headlight came from a 1997 to 2003 model Ford Expedition by identifying numbers on the light lens.
On Sept. 17, 2015, Loudermilk obtained a crime stopper tip. The tipster said the suspect from the hit and run incident on Aug. 2, 2015 drove a white Ford Explorer and took the vehicle to Gil Mata’s residence in Lubbock, Texas. The tipster also stated the vehicle was traded for a red passenger vehicle. The crime analysis unit of SAPD identified Christopher Mata and Nicole Johnson as the owners listed on the white 2002 Ford Expedition.
After further investigation, Loudermilk traveled to Lubbock on Sept. 24, 2015, and interviewed Patricio Pena, who stated he observed Gil Mata to have a white Ford Explorer at his residence during the first couple of weeks in September 2015. Pena stated that he test drove the vehicle and observed damage to the passenger side of the Explorer. When he talked to Mata about the vehicle, the man said the vehicle had been in an accident in San Angelo where someone was hit and the police notified.
Eventually, the Explorer was found, and the damage confirmed. When Loudermilk interviewed Gil Mata on Sept. 25, 2015, the man said that Christopher Mata and Nicole Johnson had brought the white Expedition to Lubbock and traded the vehicle for a red and white Lincoln.
In another interview with James Wood, Nicole Johnson’s brother, the man explained how Johnson came to his residence in Odessa the morning after the Ronda Rousey fight in August 2015. Wood stated that Johnson wanted him to go and buy a headlight and assembly for her Ford Explorer; however, it was Sunday and the wrecker yards were closed.
Eventually, Wood did as his sister asked. Wood told Loudermilk that Johnson claimed Christopher Mata had been driving the Expedition home from the bar when he struck something and did not stop at the accident.
For this crime, Mata faces a second degree felony enhanced to a first degree felony. Christopher Mata has been arrested five times in Tom Green County. His charges include DWI, Theft, Driving While License Invalid, Tamper/Fabricate Phys Evidence and this charge.
